Antara TOEFL dan IELTS

Bagi mereka yang sedang belajar bahasa Inggris untuk persiapan belajar
ke luar negeri, kata TOEFL dan IELTS hampir selalu terngiang di
telinga. Tuntutan agar TOEFL atau IELTS mencapai angka tertentu,
selalu menjadi pendorong bagi peserta kursus untuk segera mengejarnya.
Pertanyaannya kemudian, adakah jaminan bahwa angka tertentu yang
terkandung dalam TOEFL dan IELTS benar-benar mencerminkan kemampuan
bahasa Inggris seseorang? Apa pula beda antara TOEFL dan IELTS?

TOEFL atau Test Of English as a Foreign Language. Tes ini dibuat oleh
sebuah lembaga pendidikan, Educational Testing Service (ETS) di
Princeton, New Jersey, Amerika Serikat.

TOEFL dimaksudkan sebagai alat ukur atau evaluasi atas kemampuan
berbahasa Inggris seseorang. TOEFL sendiri ada tiga jenis, yaitu TOEFL
International, TOEFL ITP (Institutional Testing Program), dan TOEFL
Prediction. TOEFL Internasional sering juga disebut sebagai
computer-based TOEFL (CBT) karena bentuk tesnya menggunakan komputer.
TOEFL ITP berupa tes tertulis, dan sering disebut paper-based TOEFL
(PBT). Sedangkan TOEFL Prediction merupakan bentuk tes yang mirip
TOEFL, tetapi tidak dikeluarkan/ diprakarsai ETS.

Kini, CBT sudah banyak digunakan sejumlah lembaga pendidikan dan
kantor untuk mengetahui kemampuan bahasa Inggris calon mahasiswa atau
karyawan. Seperti tes lainnya, CBT mengandung empat unsur, yaitu
menyimak (listening), berbicara (speaking) yang kadang diganti dengan
gramatika (structure), membaca (reading), dan menulis (writing).

Listening dimaksudkan untuk mengukur kemampuan mendengar dan menyimak
bahasa Inggris, structure untuk mengukur kemampuan berbahasa Inggris
dengan gramatika baku, reading untuk mengukur kemampuan memahami
bacaan, dan writing sebagai sarana untuk mengukur kemampuan mengungkap
gagasan dalam tulisan berbahasa Inggris.

IELTS saingan TOEFL?

Selain TOEFL, kita juga sering mendengar kata IELTS. IELTS merupakan
singkatan dari The International English Language Testing System.
Kalau TOEFL merupakan tes berdasar Educational Testing Service (ETS)
di Princeton, New Jersey, Amerika Serikat, IELTS dibuat oleh Inggris
dan Australia. Boleh dikata, IELTS sebenarnya untuk negara-negara
tujuan berbahasa Inggris seperti negeri Inggris dan commonwealth
(persemakmuran) .

“Meski demikian, bukan berarti TOEFL hanya untuk Amerika, sedangkan
IELTS untuk Inggris dan negara persemakmuran. Kini, baik TOEFL dan
IELTS sudah bisa diterima di mana pun. Yang membedakan hanyalah angka
skor,” ujar Mariam Kartikatresni, Manajer Bisnis The British
Institute.

Dikemukakan, skor IELTS berkisar 0-9. Sedangkan skor TOEFL bisa
mencapai ratusan. Bagi mereka yang akan belajar ke luar negeri, amat
diharapkan nilai TOEFL lebih dari 500. Angka 400-450 sering dianggap
limited users, yaitu seseorang bisa berkomunikasi secara singkat
dengan disertai kesalahan.

Angka 450-500 sering disebut marginal user, si pemakai mampu melakukan
percakapan dasar dan dalam situasi yang tidak mendesak. Angka 501-525
disebut modest users, pemakai mampu berkomunikasi dan jarang melakukan
kesalahan. Angka 526-550 disebut competent users, pemakai dapat
berkomunikasi dalam berbagai situasi. Dan yang paling tinggi 550 ke
atas yang disebut good user, dan pemakai sudah mampu berkomunikasi
dalam berbagai situasi.

Mana yang akan dipilih, TOEFL atau IELTS, silakan pilih sendiri, mana
yang lebih disukai.

“Tetapi, yang jelas angka-angka yang tertera baik dalam TOEFL maupun
IELTS itu akan selalu berubah, sesuai perkembangan dan tuntutan
zaman,” tutur Mariam. (ton)

THE DONKEY ATTITUDE

One day a farmer’s donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously
for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally, he decided
the animal was old, and the well needed to be covered up anyway; it just
wasn’t worth it to retrieve the donkey.

He invited all his neighbours to come over and help him. They all grabbed a
shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized
what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone’s amazement he
quieted down.
A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well. He was
astonished at what he saw. With each shovel of dirt that hit his back, the
donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and take a step
up.

As the farmer’s neighbours continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he
would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon,
everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and
happily trotted off!

MORAL :
Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick to getting
out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles
is a steppingstone. We can get out of the deepest wells just by not
stopping, never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up.

2. Free your mind from worries – Most never happen.

3. Live simply and appreciate what you have.

4. Give more.
